Methodology of Assessment

SOMEDIARS Accredited Mediator and

International Mediation Institute (IMI) Certified Mediator

SOMEDIARS offers two kinds of voluntary assessment for mediators:

(1)   Applicants who have completed additional professional training program as mediators and lacking practical experience may apply for SOMEDIARS Accreditation in order to obtain proof of quality if their skills, increase their practice and professional  growth SOMEDIARS Accredited Mediators may subsequently apply for certification as IMI Certified Mediator;

(2)    Experienced mediators may apply for IMI Certification.

Both assessments are open for applicants fluent in Russian.

  1. Requirements towards the applicants:

(1)   To become  SOMEDIARS Accredited Mediator:

  • Certificate of completed professional education  in the field of mediation (at least 120 hours) (Russia) or equivalent of such training certificate in the other jurisdiction with the average assessment “good” or “excellent”; the criteria can be met through combining several mediation training courses or in one course;
  • Experience of at least three mediations within the three years preceding the application for accreditation (confirmed with feed-back forms/ written assessments of the party/ parties/ co-mediator, mediation log book, for court mediation – with the texts of the published judgments mentioning the name of mediator and specifying that she/he was acting in such quality; written self-assessment of mediator provided in the free form; other evidence);
  • At least 20 hours of continuous professional development during two years preceding the date of filing of application for accreditation (seminars/trainings/acting as speaker at mediation and ADR related international conferences/lecturing on ADR methods in educational institutions/preparation of teams for international mediation contests).

(2)   To become IMI Certified Mediator:

  • Certificate of completed professional education  in the field of mediation (at least 120 hours) (Russia) or equivalent of such training certificate in the other jurisdiction with the average assessment “good” or “excellent”; the criteria can be met through combining several mediation courses or in one course;
  • Experience of at least 20 full-scale mediations (including those where the applicant acted as co-mediator) or 200 mediated hours within the three years preceding the application for certification;
  • Summary report on at least 20 full-scale mediations (including those where the applicant acted as co-mediator) or 200 mediated hours within the three years preceding the application for certification  (Number of mediations and mediated hours can be confirmed with Logbook records (sample form of Logbook is available on the site), copies of paid invoices, filled in feed-back forms/ written assessments of the party/ parties/ co-mediator, mediation log book, for court mediations – with the texts of the published judgments mentioning the name of mediator and specifying that she/he was acting in such quality; written self-assessment of mediator provided in the free form; other evidence);
  • Feed-back general overview (based on the feed-backs from the participants to these mediations). Feed-back form is available on the site.
  • Self-Assessment Summary (drawn by the mediator in the free form and describing strengths, moments requiring improvement,  measures taken and results).

Each applicant shall adhere to a Code of Ethics.

  1. Practical Skills Assessment

(1)   For SOMEDIARS Accredited Mediators:

Based on the 45 minutes mediation role-play (with physical presence of the applicant or submitted as videotaped record) and subsequent 15minutes interview with 2 assessors;

(2)   For IMI Certified Mediator

Based on the 60 minutes mediation role-play (with physical presence of the applicant or submitted as videotaped record) and subsequent 30 minutes interview with 3 assessors.

«Grandfather Clause»

Upon the invitation of SOMEDIARS the individuals meeting the criteria described in Part I, Para.(2), subparagraphs one and two may become IMI Certified Mediators immediately after approval of QAP if they file respective application within the 3 months following the date of invitation.

  1. Applicant’s representations. Assessor’s representations.

If the applicant submits videotaped record of the role play for assessment, he/she accompanies it with the following written statement: «I confirm that this is a video record of a live role play, that this record was not adopted and is not a record of the role play rehearsed with my participance. I am aware that my accreditation/certification shall be immediately revoked should it be revealed that this statement is not true”.  This statement shall be signed by the parties and the applicant. If the record was made by the training organization, statement shall also be signed by its representative.  

Each Assessor shall sign and provide the following statement: «I have assessed the results of this applicant based on my professional skills irrespective of my personal sympathies and preferences, attitude towards training organizations, membership in professional associations, gender, nationality, race, religion or other personal characterizations. I undertake to keep confidential all information that I have received for assessment irrespective of the form in which it was provided to me”.

Form of assessment of mediator’s skills in the role play shall be provided to the assessors before the beginning of the assessment.
