The First Eurasian International Commercial Mediation Competition

The First Eurasian International Commercial Mediation Competition took place in the town of Svetlogorsk (Kaliningrad region, Russia) from May 27 till May 31, 2014.  This Competition was part of the School of the Young Scientist regularly held by the Institute of Legislation and Comparative Law with the Government  of the Russian Federation. The Competition was organized by the Baltic Fishing Fleet State Academy of and Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration.

This is the first international mediation competition for the Russian-speaking participants. At the end of each round all competitors, judges and mediators were invited to provide their feed- back and share their impressions. This opportunity transformed the contest in the full-scale professional training. It is worth noticing that the Rules of the majority of similar competitions do not provide for a possibility of exchanging feed-back from all participants.

The purpose of the Competition is to contribute to the popularization of mediation as a dispute resolution method in the intercultural business environment, to train the specialists in the use of negotiation procedures. The competing teems of the universities were composed of the client and the accompanying mediation advisor (lawyer), the mediator was representing the third university. In case of dead-lock the young mediator could recur to the assistance of the colleague – professional mediator. Professional mediators were invited to act as judges.

The next competition is scheduled for September 22-26, 2015.
